In front of a vociferous crowd which included a hefty away support, a 100% kick conversation rate by Alex Miller ensured that Park took the full 5 points from a match with followed the topsy-turvy nature of recent home games.
Playing in their blue change kit, at the 20 minute mark Park had a 14 point lead through converted tries scored by Reion Raybe, a typical Reion run in from 50 metres to, and a simple, unopposed effort by Lee Amzaleg following a break at a maul by the ever-busy Luke Boyns.
After having the lion’s share of the match Park then pressed the self-destruct button. After half an hour.
Aylesford’s first try came after a kick chase and despite some good scramble defence, the Bulls went over in front of the posts. The resultant kick was missed however.
The next second try was as a result of another Park mistake on the left wing, when another long kick was kept in play but unfortunately landed on a plate for the Aylesford right wing who ran in unopposed. Again the conversion was missed.
Park scored direct from the restart as the Bulls knocked on and after another run by Boyns the ball found its way to Jake Conway who scored the try.
The first half scoring wasn’t finished yet. Park were penalised at the scrum and Aylesford kicked to touch. From the lineout, Ayelsford set up a well constructed driving maul and went over for their third unconverted try of the half to make the score 21-15 at the break.
Aylesford started the second half strongly and after being camped in the Park 22 for a few minutes finally scored another unconverted try following a quickly taken tapped penalty.
With the Benny Hill theme tune playing loudly in the home supporters’ ears, Park regained the lead. Following a break after some hand bags and what seemed to be endless scrum penalties and, Park were finally warded a penalty try.
This time it was Park’s turn to make a mistake at the restart, conceding a penalty and another quick tap resulted in another try for Aylesford, which this time was converted.
With the game now in added time, Park were spending too much time in their won 22. Another penalty for Aylesford was kicked to touch but resolute defence from Park ended in a turnover. A simple relieving kick was all that was required but a speculative pass ended in a knock on. Park again defended stoutly and repelled the ensuing attack.
Park then scored the try of the match. From a lineout in the Aylesford Half Park went through several phases until the ball found its way to Jack Hudson out on the left. Holding of several would be tacklers, Hudson manoeuvred himself into a bit of space and sent the supporting Tommy Nightingale over for the try.
With time almost up, and from another quickly taken penalty, Aylesford scored the final try of the match under the posts. The ensuing kick did not quite make it over the bar!
Another bizarre match at Broad Walk but entertaining nonetheless. Aylseford’s contribution was immense, their number 8 Philip Wilkins outstanding. We wish them well for the rest of the season.
MOTM for Park was Ryan McSweeney and DOTD was Conor Lane
Next week Park are away at Old Alleynians in a rearranged fixture. Kick of is at 2.30
