News from Across the Park

Editorial ..

As winter finally begins to loosen its grip, it’s fair to say the season has tested our waterproofs as much as our rugby. The rain has been relentless, the pitches have taken a battering, but Broad Walk has stood up to the elements and seen more grass than mud thanks to head groundsman Colin Wooster. But with a few weeks of winter still left, there’s always the chance of a late‑arriving Beast from the East to keep us honest.

Yet even in the darkest, wettest months, something new has been lighting the place up—literally. Our brand‑new floodlights have transformed Broad Walk. They’re bright, crisp, and make an immediate difference to training and match preparation. Evening sessions feel sharper, safer, and more energised, and the whole ground has taken on a fresh sense of possibility. It’s amazing what a bit of light can do.

Off the field, the club has been buzzing. The first half of the season delivered plenty to celebrate, with December’s Vice Presidents’ Christmas Lunch standing out as a real highlight. More than 100 guests packed into the clubhouse, filling the place with stories, laughter, and the unmistakable sense that Charlton Park RFC is very much alive, kicking, and thriving.

As we head into the business end of the season, there’s still a real momentum building. The teams are finding their stride, the clubhouse is as welcoming as ever, and with those new floodlights guiding the way, the future looks brighter—literally and figuratively. Winter may have done its worst, but the spirit of Charlton Park remains as strong as ever.

Playing Matters ..

Off the field, the focus throughout the summer of 2025 was nothing short of a total rebuild. We brought in a new coaching team led by Shae Tucker and Bill Sandison, whose energy and fresh ideas have already begun to shape the club’s direction. Our recruitment campaign exceeded all expectations, generating more than 200 enquiries and giving us the foundations of a brand‑new first team. Felix Marot was re‑elected as first‑team captain, providing continuity and leadership during a period of big change. As expected, it took time for combinations to settle and for the squad to gel, but numbers at training grew rapidly and the commitment from the group has been outstanding. Building a competitive side from scratch is never straightforward, but the progress has been clear.

On the field, it’s been a mixed bag for the first team. We’ve produced several outstanding performances where the result was fully deserved, and we’ve had games where we were close but couldn’t quite get over the line. There have also been days where we simply weren’t at the races. Injuries and unavailability have taken their toll, but morale has remained strong and the squad has shown real resilience. We keep going, we keep improving, and the belief within the group hasn’t wavered. The arrival of several French players from the Amos Business School in Greenwich for the spring term has given us a timely boost, adding depth, competition, and a welcome injection of flair.

The second team have faced a different challenge altogether: finding fixtures. With rugby participation in state schools dwindling and many local clubs struggling for numbers—or folding altogether—the landscape has become increasingly difficult. To keep players active and ensure everyone gets valuable game time, we’ve been sharing resources with Footscray, Bexley, and Greenwich rugby clubs. It’s not ideal, but it’s a practical and positive way to keep grassroots rugby alive in our corner of London.

Our women’s section continues to grow steadily. A committed group now train alongside the men on Wednesday evenings, bringing great energy and enthusiasm to the club. While we haven’t yet fielded a women’s team in competitive fixtures, we’ve held joint training sessions with neighbouring clubs and built strong relationships that will help us take the next step. Expanding the women’s section remains a key priority, and we’ll be out in force over the summer to attract new players. All newcomers are welcome—just get in touch and get involved. If you’re interested in joining the women’s team — or know someone who might be — we’d love to hear from you. Drop Jess Dru a line at head_coach_women@charltonpark.org.uk or WhatsApp 07712 105710 to get involved.

And finally .. We also want to take a moment to recognise David “Jake” Conway, who has called time on his playing days with Charlton Park. After ten years of loyal service in the back row and the centres, Jake has decided to hang up his boots to spend more time with his family. His commitment, consistency, and sheer graft have been a huge part of our success over the past decade, and he leaves with the respect and gratitude of everyone at the club. Thank you, Jake, for everything you’ve given to Charlton Park. Good luck in the next chapter — you’ll be missed.

Social Rugby Matters ..

At Charlton Park RFC, rugby isn’t just about the scoreboard — it’s about connection, camaraderie, and community. Our social rugby scene continues to thrive, offering a welcoming space for players of all levels who enjoy the game without the pressure of league competition.

Whether you’re returning to rugby after a break, trying it out for the first time, or simply looking for a runaround followed by a pint, our social sessions are the perfect fit. The atmosphere is relaxed, the banter is strong, and everyone’s welcome.

Training is open to all, and there’s always room for more. If you fancy joining in or know someone who might, come down and get involved — no boots, no problem, just bring your enthusiasm.

Clubhouse and Grounds Matter ..

EDF have finally completed the work required for the installation of our solar panels. With brighter weather on the way, we expect them to start paying for themselves soon. The delay has cost us money, and we will be seeking compensation. We anticipate the installation being fully completed over the summer.

Thank you to everyone who filled in the questionnaire for the pitch irrigation system grant application. This process is still ongoing. The application has been submitted, and we are now waiting for the outcome.

We’ve also upgraded our Audio Visual setup in the clubhouse. Alongside the big‑screen TVs in the bar, we now have a high‑definition projector and screen in the hall. This will help us promote the venue as a conference facility and allow us to show international matches on an even bigger screen. A big thank you to Josh Fenn and Richard Telfer for their excellent work in getting this installed.

Finance Matters ..

Clubhouse bookings are booming, and enquiries are still pouring in across our social channels. Every penny we bring in is being reinvested straight back into the clubhouse and the playing side of the club—fueling growth on and off the pitch.

And if you catch Doug Hursey rubbing his hands together, you’ll know business is very good.

Marketing Matters ..

We know how important a strong social media presence is, and we’ve been running targeted adverts across Facebook and Instagram throughout the year—promoting our venue and facilities, driving player recruitment, and boosting our mini rugby numbers. It’s paid off. We’ve seen more clubhouse lettings, bigger turnouts on Sunday mornings, and plenty of new faces pulling on the red and white.

But now we’re ready to level up. We want the local community—and the wider rugby world—to see exactly what Charlton Park is all about. We’re currently in discussions with a media company to take our marketing to the next stage. Nothing is signed yet, but the ambition is clear.

We want a stronger, sharper presence across all social channels. We want more pitch‑side advertisers. We want more players. We want even more children discovering rugby on a Sunday morning. And we want to grow further as a true community hub.

Change is coming, so keep your eyes peeled.
The future is bright. The future is red and white.
