Charlton Park is saddened to learn of the passing of Chris Turner, a much‑loved member of our club community and a key figure in the Park sides of the 1970s.

Chris was a talented, effective fly‑half — calm under pressure, sharp in decision‑making, and blessed with a reliable boot. Like so many of that era, he came through Avery Hill College, training as a primary teacher before bringing his intelligence and composure onto the rugby field.

Former club captain Doug Springate shared fond memories of Chris, who served as his vice‑captain for a season. Doug recalls Chris sitting to his left in the team photo taken at the opening of the first clubhouse at Pippenhall — Doug in blazer and flannels, injured and unable to play, and Chris ready for action as ever. Those who played alongside him remember a steady presence, a good teammate, and a man who contributed fully to the spirit of Charlton Park.

Chris’ wife, Claire, shared that he had faced significant health challenges in recent months, supported closely by his family and cared for with great kindness by NHS staff. He passed away peacefully last Sunday.

Family flowers only; donations in Chris’ memory may be made to the British Heart Foundation.

The service will be available via video link, live on the day and for 28 days afterwards.
