It’s the start of the festive season so Charlton Park kick off its match against Bromley today with the annual VP Christmas lunch. Roast turkey with all the trimmings and plenty of Christmas cheer. Bar is open from 11.30 in readiness for an 12 noon sit down. The event is well subscribed with a number of old faces returning to cheer on the lads from the sidelines. It’s going to be a good day with the opportunity to reminisce and catch up.

Charlton Park come into this match come into the match off of the back of a hard fought victory against old friends Park House last weekend. The match was played in the face of storm Darragh and the conditions played havoc for both sides with Charlton Park just about mastering the gale the better. Once we had sussed that kicking high, into the wind and losing ground was futile, we got on with carrying the ball, keeping it tight and making the Park House backs turnaround to spend 60 minutes tackling our ‘battering rams’ in the shape of Bruce, Linga and Kini. Playing Kini at fly half was a masterstroke because once he’d broken the first tackle, there was always either Jake or Linga to take it on. The try bonus win was much needed and it gives us confidence heading into the second half of the season.

Today’s opponents are Bromley and they are having a very good season. They sit third in the table behind Canterbury and Sevenoaks having a playing record of won 8, drawn 1 and lost 2. They beat us 36-22 back in September and have inflicted the only defeat on Canterbury this season. They lost narrowly to Sevenoaks last weekend and we could hear that match going on from across the road. The results that have surprised me are the draw with Dover and the defeat to Ashford. What that tells me is that you just cannot switch off in this league and you have to be on it for the full 80 minutes every weekend.

It’s going to be a good Charlton Park day and win lose or draw, enjoy the day, enjoy the company and enjoy the beer.

Don’t forget, the club shop is open for last minute Christmas Presents
