Today’s sees the return of rugby to Broad Walk for the first time this season. We come into the game off the back of 2 narrow defeats to Deal and Betteshanger Lions and Bromley. The Deal match was a close call. We were leading going into the last 10 minutes but just run out of steam and couldn’t hold on. Whereas against Bromley we found ourselves down by 36-0 early in the second half. And it wasn’t until we had a shift of tactics and a change of personnel that we got our act together and scored 4 unanswered try’s to make the final scoreline look respectable.
Like many clubs, the number of players playing at grassroots level is declining and we’re not immune to this phenomenon. So when we had a late cry-off last week, a call went out to Cameron Belcher and despite him not having played for a couple of years, he stepped into the breach and put in a fabulous shift to ensure our scrum was well and truly anchored on the tight head side. A round of applause for that man - Definitely ’Deeds Not Words’. We had a couple of players making debuts in this match in Harry Wyatt and Matthew Jones. Both received high praise from Coach Terry Read who singled out Harry as the player of the match and Matt as a live-wire who is one to watch for the future. However, once again the old injury curse fell upon us and we lost the experienced Alan Knuckey early in the game.
Today’s opponents are our old friends and adversaries Beccehamians who make the short trip from West Wickham. They’ve had a good start to the season despite a 1 score loss to Sevenoaks in week one, they bounced back last week with convincing win over Ashford who themselves made a good start to the season. Beccehamians pride themselves on bringing through the youth and indeed, last season, 12 of the starting XV had come through its mini and youth programme. Needless to say, it’s going to be another tough afternoon.
We have a few changes to our team that takes the field this afternoon with a couple of the new lads making debuts. We also welcome back Felix Marot who captains the side for the first time following his recent lavish wedding in France during the summer. Congratulations, Felix!
