Charlton Park 24 - 40 Cranbrook

Match Report

A 40-24 defeat rarely leaves much room for optimism, but Charlton Park can take plenty of positives from a performance that grew stronger as the afternoon wore on against Cranbrook.
The final score tells only part of the story. After enduring a difficult opening hour against a well-drilled Cranbrook side, Park showed outstanding character, resilience and attacking intent to completely change the complexion of the contest. Most encouraging of all was a second-half display that saw Charlton Park win the final period of the game 24-7, demonstrating exactly what this group is capable of when confidence, intensity and belief come together.

For long periods, Cranbrook had the upper hand through a dominant set piece and capitalised on opportunities when they arose. But rather than accept the outcome, Park responded with real determination. As the game entered its closing stages, the hosts threw off the shackles and began to play with ambition and freedom, moving the ball with purpose and asking serious questions of the Cranbrook defence.

The final 20 minutes were undoubtedly the highlight. Driving the tempo higher and carrying with greater conviction, Park suddenly found the fluency that had been missing earlier in the afternoon. Support runners appeared in numbers, contact work improved and the reward came in a flurry of four tries that transformed the scoreboard and lifted everyone around the club.

What stood out most was the team's refusal to give up. At a point when many sides might have folded, Charlton Park instead produced their best rugby of the day. The energy from the bench, the work rate across the park and the desire to keep attacking right until the final whistle reflected a squad playing for one another and showing genuine pride in the shirt.
The four-try haul secured a valuable bonus point and, more importantly, provided evidence that the team possesses the attacking quality to trouble opponents when momentum is on their side. The challenge now is to reproduce that intensity and accuracy for longer periods of the game.

While the result ultimately went Cranbrook's way, the lasting memory for Park will be the spirit shown in the closing stages. Winning the latter part of the contest 24-7 and finishing with four tries demonstrated character, fitness and attacking potential. If Charlton Park can build on the standards set in those final 20 minutes, there are plenty of reasons to look forward with confidence.
