After about 16 months of wondering whether we’d see rugby again, we did! With still a month to go before the league season starts Charlton Park and Chingford had just about the perfect pre-season practice you could wish for, sharing six tries over four twenty minute quarters with Park’s Tom Amzaleg’s kicking being the deciding factor in their 21-15 win on Colin’s carpet of a pitch.

It was clear that players were understandably rusty, but this was a proper game and there was much for both sides to feel pleased with . From our point of view the main interest lay in the dozen or so new players making their Park debuts and we were left in no doubt that this next season will have a lot for Park supporters to look forward to. A newly forged link with Woolwich Barracks means that there is a distinct South Sea Island look to the team, and all three tries came from Fiji. An outrageous offload led to the first from scrum half Wakolo Saubuluti after a scoreless first period. This was followed by some quick passing creating the space for Vereti Naitaka to burst down the middle, and then in the second half a crossfield passing movement led to Reion Raybe putting left winger Veretareki Tinikabuta away for an extravagant dive in the clubhouse corner.

If you want to watch exciting rugby, or if you want to be part of it, Charlton Park may be the place to be. What we can be sure of is that there will be competition for places right across the team, and that, after 16 months, is something to be pleased about. We wish our visitors from the north a successful season themselves and look forward to meeting them again
