I would expect both Sidcup and we will have come away from this game on Wednesday night feeling that it ticked all the boxes; highly competitive, evenly matched and enabling coaches and players to weigh up where training and fitness levels lie.

The big plus for Charlton Park was the performance of the new faces, of whom there were six – a big welcome to Vaki Antoniou, Alex Cormack-Widdop, Alex Bill, Iwan Haines, Nathan Acheson and Pete Mitchell, and the improved fitness of the regulars who have trained regularly.

For the record Park won by two tries, scored by Jake Conway and Gareth Whatley to nil, but this was a pre-season practice and such things didn’t really matter. However, it did show, with half a team away on holiday or nursing injuries, that we will be up for this season.
