PURLEY JOHN FISHER 37 CHARLTON PARK 9

Despite being in contention for the first thirty minutes of the match Charlton’s play began to fall away and combined with Purley John Fisher’s play becoming more direct Charlton were consigned to another league defeat.

Charlton made the worst possible start to the match when they fell behind by six points after only five minutes of the match as Purley John Fisher kicked two penalty goals.

Resurgence in Charlton’s fortunes was given when their forwards began to enter into the match. Following a solid forward drive up field, from Charlton Purley John Fisher, in their efforts to stem the attack, gave away a penalty within kicking range and fly half Martin Cornwall stepped forward to score the points with a well judged kick.

Having scored points seemed to give Charlton some element of self-belief and following further good play Charlton were awarded a second penalty in kicking range and once again Cornwall made a successful kick to level the scores.

Charlton took the lead after twenty minutes with a third Cornwall penalty, awarded when following good handling by their backs number eight forward Eric Doms drove up field and Purley John Fisher killed the ball to prevent the promising move developing.

Through out the opening minutes of the match Purley john Fisher had caused problems in Charlton’s defence and it was an error in defence that set up the first try of the half. Following a positional kick, from Purley John Fisher, Charlton made an defensive error and gave away good field position to Purley John Fisher and they took the opportunity to score a converted try to give them the lead for the second time in the match and one that they were never to lose.

Charlton, to their credit continued to try and pass the ball and when they had the opportunity their backs made several good runs and good chasing of the ball saw Russ Taylor and Michael Casizzi, allied to good drives by Doms caused problems for Purley John Fisher.

The final few minutes of the first half saw Purley John Fisher causing severe problems for Charlton’s defence as the home side created several multi-phased periods of pressure and Charlton rode their luck when Purley John Fisher missed with a penalty kick.

Purley John Fisher having finished the first half in the Charlton half and the match continued in the second half in a similar vein.  In spite of Charlton defending well from the outset of the half they were beginning to have problems in tight play against the Purley John Fisher forwards. It was following a Charlton error at a lineout saw Purley John Fisher score a push over try from a five metre scrum close to the Charlton goal line.

The remainder of the second half saw Charlton playing on the retreat and despite good runs from Doms, Cornwall and Taylor Charlton were unable to gain any continuity in their play and Purley John Fisher’s forward dominance was to create opportunities for the home side to score a further three tries, two of which were converted to complete a very disappointing afternoon for the visitors.
