JASON LEONARD BECOMES PATRON OF CHARLTON RUGBY CLUB

Tony Blair joins the campaign to help community sports clubs in London

Charlton Park Rugby Football Club is delighted to announce that Jason Leonard, former England international and part of the 2003 World Cup winning team, has agreed to be the Club’s Patron.

In April 2006, Prime Minister Tony Blair pledged, "I will become the patron of a London community sports club. I will work with the club over the years as the Olympics approaches in 2012 to support their development and raise their profile but only if 100 other public figures in London will join me in supporting other clubs."

Jason Leonard agreed to join up and with the help of the RFU and Sport England has been linked with Charlton Park RFC. Jason, who started his rugby career at Barking before achieving international success with England and the British and Irish Lions, will receive a warm welcome from everyone at Charlton Park.

To celebrate the success of his pledge, the Prime Minister hosted a reception at 10 Downing Street which was attended by Jason Leonard who was introduced to Nick Hollier, Chairman of Charlton Park RFC, Bert Duffus, who is part of the team that coaches junior players at the Club, and his son Stephen who is a promising young player. Other celebrities attending included Trevor Brooking, Clare Balding, Ken Livingstone and Tessa Jowell.

We have good facilities and hope that with Jason’s help we can get as many people as possible from all sections of the community playing rugby. It’s a great game for everyone. As well as keeping active and fit, you make great friends.

Everyone is welcome at Charlton Park RFC and we hope to involve the local community in the life of the club as we all look forward to 2012.”
