DEEDS NOT WORDS – YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU

VOLUNTEERING AT CHARLTON PARK RUGBY CLUB

Charlton Park is a successful rugby club not just because of the success of the teams that take the pitch on a Saturday. The players and coaches are vitally important but so are the dedicated individuals who work extremely hard behind the scenes to help the club function.

It is apparent that the back-up team at the club is much smaller than many of our contemporaries and other clubs at our level. We therefore need more help to grow the club and ensure it stays strong going forward. Whatever skills you can offer, we need you, whatever you think you can do.

Some of the key areas that would benefit from more support at the moment are as follows:

Team management and player liaison; attracting sponsorship; attracting new members; running social events; bar supervision & liaison; supporting house and grounds maintenance; provision of office equipment; community liaison etc.

Helping develop the club and putting it on an even stronger footing will be very rewarding. If you feel that you can give some of your time and support, no matter how small, please let a member of the Committee know.

Without volunteers the club simply could not function so please be prepared to do what you can to help!

Charlton Park end successful season with two league wins

Charlton Park Rugby Club ended one of the best seasons ever in their 120 year history with both their first and second teams winning their leagues.

The firsts, captained by Kent county prop Terry Read (second left at bottom), beat Medway 43-22 to put the final stamp on the league championship they had already achieved two games ago. They finished the season 9 points ahead of second-placed Maidstone and are promoted into London League One.

The date of this photo is uncertain, but we do know some of the people in it so it will come from just before the First World War, round about 1912 when we had a pretty strong team. At the time, of course, we were the Old Charltonians.

The captain, holding the ball, is FR (Freddie) Roberts. He played half-back (scrum-half?) for Kent and also represented London against Paris that year. We cannot be completely certain but the player on his right is probably HJ Turpin, who also played for the county.

Roberts survived the war to be captain again in 1919. On his left is Harold Hollis who was in the Kent side that won the County Championship in 1923.
